If this pain is new and acute or accompanied by fever, please refer your client to a doctor. Flank pain is very common with kidney dysfunction. If the pain is recurring and they've been cleared by their doctor, you're probably dealing with the serratus muscle in the mid-back, associated with extension, twisting, and expiration.
To deal with serratus posterior inferior, start by tractioning the broad sheets of fascia that encompass it. Work along, toward, and away from the spine, and warm the entire region. You can then follow up with some more specific work, including trigger point therapy for the muscle itself.
Let me know what you think, and hit me up with ideas for future videos! Happy 2015 :)
